What were the old rules for eligibility ?
Old rules for eligibility were very strict. Earlier, a candidate was eligible to appear in NEET UG entrance exam only, if he/she has studied physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology in class XI and XII with practical sessions along with English. Two years of regular study of all these subjects was required from a regular school. Candidates studying these subjects from an open school or as a private candidate were not eligible to appear in NEET UG. According to old rules, study of biology/biotechnology or any other requisite subject could not be completed as an additional subject after passing class XII.
Biggest advantage of new rules
New NMC rules opens a window of opportunity for those keen on pursuing medical degree even if they did not have biology/biotechnology as a core subject in class XI and XII. This is a sigh of relief for all those candidates who could not decide to pursue a medical career in 10+2.
