NMC revises tie-breaker criteria for NEET UG- Physics over Biology now!

NMC (National Medical Commission) has decided to revise its tie-breaker rule for deciding ranks in NEET UG exam. According to the latest notification, marks scored in physics will now decide the rank in NEET 2024 exam. Read on for full details.

The new tie-breaker rule for deciding ranks of candidates in NEET UG

As per the new rules, in case two candidates get equal marks in NEET UG exam, one who gets higher marks in physics will get higher rank. If marks in physics are equal, then marks in chemistry will be the tie breaker. But, if marks in chemistry are also equal then marks in biology will be the tie breaker. If the tie still continues, then a draw can be done using a computer without any human intervention.

Current tie-breaker rule for deciding ranks of candidates in NEET UG

Current practice gives priority to the marks obtained in biology, followed by chemistry and physics. In case the tie continues (if subject marks are same), the older candidate gets the higher rank.

Announcement date of new tie-breaker rule

The new tie breaker rule is most likely to be implemented from NEET 2024 onwards and was notified on June 2, 2023.

Dr. Komal’s view

Well, the most relevant subject for M.B.B.S is biology. Therefore, marks in biology should be given preference and it’s better if NMC changes its decision and reverts to the earlier position.

Conclusion

As the new rule is most likely to be implemented from NEET 2024 onwards. Therefore, NEET aspirants should now have to focus equally on physics, chemistry, and biology because:

1. Marks in physics and chemistry will be given priority for deciding your rank.

2. Biology has the major chunk in NEET UG so your grip in biology will impact your overall score in NEET.

This whole thing will make NEET UG 2024 more competitive as compared to earlier ones.
